Steve Overmyer

SCROLL HONOREES

Growing up in the small, rural town of Andrews with just over a thousand residents, it might be easy to dream big, but also a challenge to make those dreams a reality. It takes talent, hard work, some luck, and in Steve Overmyer’s case, a little bit of small-town charm and a “look” that the television camera loved.

Overmyer got a taste of being in the media on Huntington North High School’s radio station, WVSH. He was also a member of the Vikings football team in the fall, but managed to work on broadcasts of other sports throughout the school year.

It was during his time on WVSH when Overmyer developed a passion for broadcasting.

Following his high school graduation in 1990, Overmyer stayed in-state, attending Vincennes University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in journalism in 1994.

That’s when a twist of fate altered his career path.

Overmyer was focused on a career in radio. He had worked as an on-air radio personality at WTHI in Terre Haute through college and had even accepted his first job after graduation at a station in Mississippi. However, while preparing to move, he received a phone call from the news director at WBBH-Television in Fort Myers, Florida. Upon learning that Overmyer had not yet signed a contract with the Mississippi radio station, the news director from Fort Myers quickly faxed a contract that day, which Overmyer signed.

It proved to be a life-changing moment.

Now focused on television, he quickly established himself in Florida, earning Associated Press Sportscaster of the Year for the state in 1995. After his stint as a sports anchor at WBBH-TV, Overmyer joined another television station — also in Fort Myers — as the station’s sports director.

Two years later, in 1997, Overmyer took on a new challenge and moved to Phoenix, Arizona, where he worked at KPNX-Television. His roles included sports reporter and anchor, and he hosted the station’s Sunday sports wrap-up show. His time in Phoenix gave him the opportunity to cover several professional sports teams, including the NFL Cardinals, NHL Coyotes, NBA Suns, and Major League Baseball’s Diamondbacks.

National networks noticed Overmyer’s work, and in 2001, he was hired by CNN-Sports Illustrated and moved to their headquarters in Atlanta. He advanced quickly within the company and became a sports anchor for the cable network, serving in that role for five years.

While CNN gave him national exposure, Overmyer could not pass up a chance to work in the world’s largest media market, joining SportsNet New York in New York City in January of 2006. During his time at SNY, Overmyer was utilized in several capacities. He anchored the nightly highlight show, hosted a talk-show, and was a field reporter for all the New York sports teams. He on the field for some of the Big Apple’s most memorable events, including two Super Bowls with the Giants, a World Series with the Yankees and Derek Jeter’s final game at Yankee Stadium.

Since 2011, Overmyer has been a member of the CBS News team in New York City as a sports anchor and reporter. He is the host of Sports Update every weekend on CBS News New York. Overmyer has also ventured from the sports realm with a series of human-interest stories called “Snapshot New York.” Seven years ago, in 2018, he was awarded an Emmy for his feature story about the sport of handball in New York City.

Active in the community, Overmyer works closely with many charities in New York including the Muscular Dystrophy Association, Hartley House, and the Tunnel 2 Towers Foundation.

He also gives back to the community where it all began, regularly hosting groups of Huntington North High School radio/TV students on trips to New York. He offers them a unique opportunity to tour the city and experience the media world at the CBS World Headquarters.

Overmyer remains proud of his Andrews roots and the dreams he had all those years ago. He has not forgotten his own story of the work he did to make those dreams happen. Despite working and traveling across the country and reaching the highest levels of the industry, Overmyer remains humble and credits growing up in Huntington County and its people for helping set him on a course to success.
